House in a Night Sky
In 2020, I began a series of drawings that used a character as a stand-in for myself. I could place this stand-in into different, surreal environments and explore other ideas and emotions. The project evolved further into an animation, an installation, and blacklight-sensitive posters.
After completing those works, I began creating a sculptural drawing, similar to a diorama, in which the stand-in character would occupy a broken house. This project has evolved over the past five years. Upon completion, the artwork includes a large dome that will act as a night sky above the fractured house. There is a basement level which breaks into the upper level and beyond. This sculpture also has panels that close in front of the sculpture. Drawings cover the entire outside of the sculpture, as well.
The combination of three-dimensional sculpture with magic realist-inspired drawings, has allowed me to deepen the boundaries of my work.
Inspired by artists such as Gertrude Abercrombie, John Wilde, Hieronymus Bosch and others, Hopefully this artwork allows for numerous unintended associations and meanings from the viewer.
